The Creature Chronicles

Exploring the Black Lagoon Trilogy

ebook

He was the final addition to Universal's "royal family" of movie monsters: the Creature from the Black Lagoon. With his scaly armor, razor claws and a face only a mother octopus could love, this Amazon denizen was perhaps the most fearsome beast in the history of Hollywood's Studio of Horrors. But he also possessed a sympathetic quality which elevated him fathoms above the many aquatic monsters who swam in his wake.

Everything you ever wanted to know about the Gill Man and his mid-1950s film career (Creature from the Black Lagoon, Revenge of the Creature, The Creature Walks Among Us) is collected in this book, packed to the gills with hour-by-hour production histories, cast bios, analyses, explorations of the music, script-to-screen comparisons, in-depth interviews and an ocean of fin-tastic photos.

This year is the 60th anniversary of Creature from the Black Lagoon. Revenge of the Creature followed in 1955 and The Creature Walks Among Us a year later. Horror film scholar Weaver (Attack of the Monster Movie Makers: Interviews with 20 Genre Giants; Poverty Row Horrors!) gives a behind-the-scenes view of the film trilogy. Each movie is examined through an exhaustive account of production history, interviews, biographies, and photographs. Julie Adams, the female lead of the first film, wrote the introduction. In Part 1 of the book, which forms the bulk of the text, the films' productions are investigated in detail, including an account of the soundtracks and a brief analysis. Part 2 consists of ephemera, such as interviews, an overview of the films' influence on other horror movies, and commentary on plans for a remake. Thoroughly researched, this lighthearted, easy read is packed with first-hand narratives from producers, directors, costume designers, and actors. Peppered throughout are production-set photographs and publicity shots. VERDICT While this may be too detailed for casual readers and not offer enough critical analysis for film scholars, devout fans of the "Creature" trilogy will enjoy the spirited backstage stories and photos.--Shannon Marie Robinson, Denison Univ.
